We are very, very small…

What is the price of two sparrows—one copper coin? But not a single sparrow
can fall to the ground without your Father knowing it. And the very hairs on
your head are all numbered. Matthew 10:29-30 (NLT)

It boggles my mind to think that the God who created all of this, loves us so much that He knows the hairs on our individual heads! Why would God, in all of the beauty and glory of space, decide to create planet earth…a tiny, very miniscule part of these vast amounts of galaxies? And then, on planet earth, decide to place people here? And then, want a relationship with those people, so much so, that when those teeny, tiny, people mess up God’s perfect garden design, He sends His Son here to clean up the mess?

Out of the vastness of all this, Jesus left the Throne Room of Heaven, and came to teeny, tiny earth in the form of a small baby…not even that, in the form of a tiny seed planted in a woman. And we worry? And we fret? And we wonder if God is capable of handling all our problems today? Let’s take some time to think about that…

Things started happening with Jesus even before He was born, as we read about when young Mary visited Elizabeth. How did John the Baptist know that His Lord had entered the room, even when both babies were still inside the womb? There was obviously more going on there than met the eye, and in looking out at space, there is a whole lot more going on there than meets our eye…even through the most powerful of telescopes.

It’s hard sometimes in life, when the weight of everything gets to be more than we think we can bear--when the troubles come, when relationships struggle, when the sorrows mount, when just getting through a single day can zap our strength and leave us questioning why. Why all this? Why now? Why me? Why here? Why anything? The world around us seems to crush us from the pressure, and we lose our focus on the big picture because our own personal picture seems so very big!

God knows exactly what’s going on here, and if we will talk with Him about it, we would see His hand upon all our lives in a more amazing way. We would see how very much God cares about the sparrow, and how very much He cares about His children.

We wonder, is God really in the small stuff? Well, God is HUGE, and we are very, very small stuff, and He lives in us! So He must be!! We can’t know what’s way out there in other galaxies, but we can know the Creator of it all, and that’s an awesome privilege!

Look up into the heavens. Who created all the stars? He brings them out like an army, one after another, calling each by its name. (Isaiah 40:26)

Why God placed us here, on this tiny planet, in this tiny bit of space, only God can know. But we can know that Mary was special to God, because God chose her to carry the life of His very own Son. And we can know that we are special to God, because He has chosen us also…Amen.
